First: Digital Keypad Interface

This is the front interface that the user will interact with to set and open the code.

1. Keypad Hardware Components:

  • Keypad: A high-quality, water and dust-resistant silicone membrane keypad or push-button type.

  • Buttons: Contains numbers (0 to 9), in addition to two functional buttons:

    • "*" (Asterisk) button: Typically used to cancel input or reset.

    • "#" (Hash) button: Used to confirm the entered code.

  • Small Display Screen (Optional): A small (4-8 digit) optional LED or LCD screen that displays "****" during code entry to protect privacy, and shows short messages like "OPEN", "ERROR", "SET". If the screen is not available, full reliance can be placed on visual and auditory signals.

2. Mechanism for setting a 3- to 8-digit security code:

  • Factory Setting: The safe comes with a default password (e.g., 1234).

  • Steps to set a new code (the door must be open):

    1. Press the Reset Button located inside the safe (behind the door). The system will emit two beeps.

    2. Enter the new code, consisting of 3 to 8 digits.

    3. Press the # button to confirm.

    4. The system will emit three long beeps, indicating success. If it emits one intermittent beep, it means the operation failed (incorrect code length) and you should try again.

3. Electronic Locking System, Light Signals, and Error Alert:

a. Visual and Auditory Signals:

  • Idle State: A faint green light flashes every 5 seconds to indicate that the system is active and ready.

  • Key Press: A yellow (or orange) light illuminates momentarily with each button press, accompanied by a short "beep" sound.

  • Code Entered & Verified:

    • If opening is successful: A solid green light illuminates for 3 seconds, accompanied by two long "beeps," then the mechanical locking mechanism (Solenoid) activates for one second to allow the user to turn the knob and open the door.

    • If there is an error: A red light flashes 3 times consecutively and rapidly, accompanied by three short "beeps."

  • Low Battery Alert: A separate red light (or battery indicator on the screen) begins to flash continuously, accompanied by an intermittent beep sound when attempting to open the safe.

b. Error Alert and Anti-Tamper Lockout System:

  • First and Second Errors: If an incorrect code is entered, the red light illuminates 3 times and error beeps are heard.

  • Third Error (Temporary Lockout): If the user enters the wrong code three consecutive times:

    • The red light flashes intensely and a continuous "beep" sound is emitted for 30 seconds.

    • The system enters "Lockout" mode, where the keypad stops functioning completely for 5 minutes.

  • Sixth Error (Extended Lockout): If the error is repeated three more times (total of 6 errors):

    • A louder alert sound is emitted and the red light continues to flash.

    • A longer lockout is activated for 15 minutes.

Second: Hidden Emergency Key System for Manual Opening

This is the professional system that ensures the safe does not permanently lock in case of forgotten code or electronic system malfunction.

1. Emergency Key Mechanism Design:

  • Key Location (The Hidden Location): It must be cleverly and securely hidden, and inconspicuous.

    • Best Option: A small decorative cover, company logo plate, or the entire digital keypad is designed to be easily movable or removable with a special small magnetic key (provided with the safe).

    • Second Option (Less secure but easier): The key lock is hidden behind a dummy keypad or under a small decorative handle. The first option is the most professional.

  • Lock Type (Key Type): It is preferable to use a tubular key or a special dimple key to ensure difficulty in copying or opening with ordinary "lockpicks."

2. Manual Opening Mechanism Using the Key:

  1. Exposing the Lock: The user moves the hidden cover to expose the emergency key slot.

  2. Inserting the Key: The key is inserted and turned in a specific direction (e.g., counter-clockwise).

  3. Opening: Once the key is turned, the mechanical lock directly retracts the main deadbolt, completely bypassing the electronic locking system.

  4. Resetting: After opening the safe with the key, the key must be returned to its original position and the hidden cover replaced. Now, the owner can reset the code as described in the first section.

Summary of Proposed System Technical Specifications:

  • Microcontroller Unit (MCU): Low-Power Microcontroller such as AVR or ARM Cortex-M0.

  • Power Source: 4 AA alkaline batteries (6 volts), with very low power consumption in standby mode.

  • Locking Mechanism: High-quality Solenoid for unlocking after code verification, and a Geared Motor if the system automatically locks and unlocks (not just unlocking).

  • Low Voltage Warning: System set to provide a red light signal when battery voltage drops below 4.8 volts.

  • Memory Retention: Use of Non-Volatile Memory (EEPROM) to save the secret code even when batteries are completely replaced.

  • Materials: Digital panel made of high-resistance ABS plastic or painted metal (Zamak), and the emergency lock is fully mechanical and made of brass and stainless steel.
